Focus On Your Strengths, Superman!

Know Your StrengthsSuperman doesn’t wall int the fact that he doesn’t have the flashy toys that Batman sports or the wall-walking ability that comes naturally to Spiderman.  He doesn’t schedule appointments with his therapist to discuss his unnatural fear of kryptonite or that there are people out to get him. He uses his best abilities to get the job done and call it Miller Time.

Why do we focus on our weaknesses? We each have a precious gift that comes naturally to us and betters others, ourselves and the world as a whole. Oh, sure, there are tons of writers — but no one can tell the stories you tell the way you tell them. Yeah, there are people out there that can lead a Fortune 500 company — but not with your specific skill set or personal assets.

According to a blog post by John Maxwell, “Focusing on weaknesses instead of strengths is like having a handful of coins – a few made of pure gold and the rest of tarnished copper – and setting aside the gold coins to spend all your time cleaning and shining the copper ones in the hopes of making them look more valuable. No matter how long you spend on them, they will never be worth what the gold ones are. Go with your greatest assets; don’t waste your time.”

Rather than focusing on areas where we could use a bit of work, we need to work on expanding our natural strengths. Use what we excel at to benefit others at work or in our homes. Instead of feeding our insecurities about areas that we are lacking or our deficiencies when compared with others, it is beneficial to see how our strengths play into the situation. Narrow down what it is that we do so well so we can offer the best.

What is it that you do well? What are your strengths? Make a list. Think about how you can flex that strength to make sure it grows each and every day.
